Some people are ignoring signs to stay away from contaminated beaches in King County.

KIRO 7 TV found a number of people in Lake Washington off Meydenbauer Bay Beach, which has high bacteria levels.

King County’s website has information about beach safety.

Other beaches with unsafe levels of bacteria include Gene Coulon, Matthews, and Newcastle beaches –all on the shores of Lake Washington.

UW finds almost half of cancer deaths are preventable

Nearly half of cancer deaths worldwide can be attributed to preventable risk factors, including smoking, drinking too much alcohol, or having a high body mass index, according to researchers at the University of Washington. They found that 45% of all cancer deaths and 42% of healthy years lost could be attributable to preventable risk factors.

The researchers believe their study represents the biggest effort to date to determine the global burden of cancer attributable to risk factors.

Ostrom Mushrooms faces civil rights lawsuit

WA State Attorney General has filed a civil rights lawsuit against a mushroom grower.

The lawsuit accuses Yakima County’s Ostrom Mushrooms of discrimination and retaliation for firing its largely female workforce, after they raised concerns.

Many of the women are state residents and experienced agriculture workers.

The suit claims they were replaced with male foreigners who have fewer rights.

No comment — yet — from Ostroms.

Emerald City Comic Con returns

Superheros, sci-fi characters, and people dressed as their favorite villains can be found all around the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle this weekend.

Emerald City Comic Con organizers say this year’s event is going to look a lot more like the convention before the Pandemic shut things down.

The convention started Thursday and runs through Sunday.

Some 65,000 people are expected to attend.
