Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced that they have completed construction on half of the expansion joints on I-5, marking a major milestone in the Revive I-5 project.

Now that the 35 southbound expansion joints between I-90 and Spokane Street have been replaced, drivers will notice a distinct lack of a “ka-thunk” noises as they drive on the highway, as well as a much smoother ride on the newly repaved sections at the south end of the project.

Upcoming holiday weekends can’t escape Revive I-5 construction

The project is about halfway complete, with the right-hand side expansion joint as well as joints in the on-ramps to the highway, which is expected to be completed by early October.

Once the project is finished, 56 expansion joints will be replaced, many of which are from the original I-5 construction in the early 1960s.

Next up on the docket for Revive I-5? Fixing eight more miles of highway between Yesler Way in downtown Seattle to Northgate.

“This multi-year project will involve a lot of the work mentioned above – expansion joints, repaving, replacing some pavement all the way down to dirt,” WSDOT said in their update on construction. “We’re still sorting out the details of how the work will be done, but you can expect major lane reductions during construction season as well as some of the now-familiar weekend-long lane reductions.”
