Residents within a mile of a tanker truck crash are being asked to shut their windows and turn off HVAC systems due to an ammonia leak.

KIRO 7 reports the eastbound and westbound Indian John rest areas and adjacent homes are being evacuated.

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office warned of a potential Anhydrous Ammonia leak at least an hour after the semi-truck crashed near Cle Elum, shutting down both directions of I-90.

Washington State Trooper Brian Moore said four ammonia tanks fell off the semi. One of them is vented ammonia.

One person was killed in the crash involving the truck, which is on fire, and a car.

The crash occurred near SR 970 in the westbound lanes of I-90 around 8:30 a.m., about one mile east of Cle Elum.

Traffic is stopped westbound at Ellensburg and eastbound at exit 84 near Cle Elum. Detours are SR 10, SR 970, and US 97.

The state warns of a “lengthy closure” due to the crash. Estimated time for I-90 to reopen is approximately 5 p.m.
