Kent to finally take down sandbags

Mar 8, 2012, 5:44 AM | Updated: 8:37 am

Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke told the Chamber of Commerce in her annual state of the city address that the city is finally going to take down all the sandbags along the Green River this summer.

They’ve been protecting the city from potential flooding since 2009 when the Howard Hansen Dam upriver was in danger of failing, but the sandbags are no longer necessary after repairs were made by the Army Corps of Engineers.

There are more than 17,000 sandbags along 12 miles of the Green River and the levees in Kent.

The Kent Reporter says King County paid for them, but Kent is going to have to pay to remove them.

Mayor Cooke says it will cost the city $3 million.
