John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole raised at Seattle Center

Feb 26, 2012, 9:48 AM | Updated: 1:20 pm

Hundreds gathered at Pier 57 in Seattle to accompany the new John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole to the Seattle Center on Sunday morning.

The march began on the Seattle waterfront as several hundred people marched with the totem pole to its final resting place at the Broad Street Green. The pole was officially raised during an afternoon ceremony.

Williams, 50, was the woodcarver shot by a Seattle Police officer two years ago when the officer saw him walking down the sidewalk with a knife. A review board found the shooting was unjustified, but the controversy surrounding it has led to promises of change in police training.

The Williams family says the pole was carved as a symbol of calm and healing.
