Community gathers for vigil after student killed in shooting at Ingraham High School

A vigil was held after a shooting at Ingraham High School in North Seattle left one student dead.

The vigil was held at 6 p.m. at the Haller Lake Methodist Church to help those affected by the shooting and to honor the victim.

“It was passionate and it was a general wish for a world where people didn’t need to do that, to kill and to carry guns,” Janice, a woman who attended the vigil, said.

It was a sad, somber scene at the church which is located just blocks from the school.

“It feels good to be together, to not be alone, to be able to claim that we’re not alone in our grief but also it’s terrible. I would rather not have to come together at all, I would rather have the tragedy not happen in the first place,” Megan Ramer, who attended the vigil, said.

Everyone was welcomed at the vigil.

“Every time we experience a tragedy of gun violence, we just have to hold space for that trauma and recognize that healing is going to take a lot of time,” Reverend Steve Jerbi said.

Cameras were not allowed inside the service. Jerbi said he wanted to bring people together after this tragedy.

“We all are impacted by gun violence. It affects every community and we find this tragedy coming close to home and we want to just honor that pain and make space for us to be connected and to remind each other that we don’t face these challenges alone,” Jerbi said.
