Skin disease threatens Puget Sound’s endangered Southern Resident orcas

Jun 29, 2023, 1:28 PM | Updated: 5:09 pm

Scientists have discovered 99% of the Southern Resident Killer Whales had lesions after they looked at photos taken between 2004 to 2016 to analyze their skin.

Researchers said the wounds on the whale’s skin could potentially indicate that their immune systems are compromised, and that it might be difficult for them to fight off disease. The group of scientists stressed further research is needed. The study was published June 28 in the Public Library of Science.

There are only 73 Southern Residents in the wild today, with an additional orca in captivity.

Scientists stated a lack of Chinook salmon — their main food source — as well as noise pollution from ships are contributing to their decline.
