Hacker hits Bremerton Housing Authority, demands $3,700

An internet hacker that accessed the Bremerton Housing Authority’s website is demanding $3,700 in exchange for the names of 1,100 client names and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. The FBI is now looking into the crime.

KIRO Radio’s Jason and Burns were confused by the hackers chosen website.

Jason Rantz: “I have so many questions about this story. Why, if you’re a hacker, are you going after the Bremerton Housing Authority? What did you think you were going to get? You’ve got 1,100 client names and the last four digits of their Social Security. They are going to the Bremerton Housing Authority because they can’t afford to live in their homes.”

This hacker looking for money — more precisely, $3,700 — chose a website that services people who struggle financially.

Jason Rantz : “That’s so oddly specific. Why not round up and say you want four-grand? Or go all in with five grand?”

Zak Burns: “I’m thinking he probably wants to spend the week at Sandals. He’s got one of those prepackaged vacations that come in at $3,700. He doesn’t want to be greedy.”

Continuing to joke about the bizarre story, Jason and Burns theorized it was probably a young kid performing his first hack. They suggest his skills could be put to better use.

Rantz: “Once they catch him, the Bremerton Housing Authority might hire him to be a consultant on computer security.”

Burns: “That’s what we need to do. We need to hire the best hackers out there. And the best hackers don’t work for the government.”
