Police at Washington State University (WSU) are warning visitors to stop poking bears at the school’s Bear Research, Education, and Conservation Center.

Officials said some people have tried to prod the research animals with sticks and branches.

“While we understand the curiosity, this behavior is dangerous — for both you and the bears,” WSU Police said in a Facebook post Monday.

Such actions are not only harmful but also illegal, the post said. Injuring a research animal is a Class C felony under Washington law, carrying penalties of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

WSU authorities warn area is under surveillance

WSU Police added that the area is under video surveillance and that violators will be reported.

They urge anyone who sees “concerning behavior” to report it to campus authorities.

“These bears are part of vital research at Washington State University,” the post said. “Thank you for helping us protect our bears and the important work being done here at WSU.”
