A Lummi Nation Police Department officer needed two surgeries after he was shot seven times during a traffic stop on Tuesday.

Jesus Penuelas-Agramon was charged with attempted murder Wednesday for allegedly shooting the officer, according to the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Penuelas-Agramon was arrested and identified as a 26-year-old convicted felon wanted in Colorado, who is known to use multiple aliases, according to charging documents.

He was arrested in Ferndale around 12 hours after the alleged shooting, Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley confirmed during a press conference Monday. Penuelas-Agramon has a criminal history of drug possession.

According to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), the officer was shot at 12:52 a.m. on Monday after he approached a white Ford Ranger he had been following. The vehicle had driven off the road and ended up in a ditch.

When the officer walked up to the truck, he was shot in the left ankle, thigh, and knee, right leg, abdomen, and head before the suspect escaped. Police said the officer’s bulletproof vest stopped one round aimed at his chest.

“Today, we faced a horrific incident that has deeply affected our community,” Tanksley stated via a Facebook post. “A brave Lummi Nation Police Officer was shot while performing their duty to protect and serve. The officer received immediate medical attention, and we hope for their full recovery.”

The officer was taken to emergency medical care immediately after the shooting and has since undergone surgery.

“I want to emphasize our unwavering support for the officer and their family during this difficult time,” Tanksley stated. “We are working diligently to investigate this incident to help ensure that justice is served.”

The investigation is being conducted by the Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Response Team.
