A 28-year-old man was shot by his girlfriend’s ex-partner on Monday night after he allegedly assaulted her and threatened them both.

Officers with the Seattle Police Department (SPD) responded to a shooting near Broadway and E. Jefferson Street. When they arrived at the scene, they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. Police provided him medical aid until the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) arrived and continued treatment. SFD then transported him to Harborview Medical Center.

The man is in critical condition, as of this reporting. He remains in intensive care.

The man’s girlfriend and her ex-partner, who is the father of her child, were at the scene when deputies arrived. SPD officers determined the ex-partner was the one who shot the 28-year-old boyfriend. He cooperated with the SPD and was detained.

Domestic assault before the shooting

Before the shooting took place, SPD officers determined that a domestic violence assault occurred between the young woman and her boyfriend, the now-injured 28-year-old.

“While she attempted to leave him, he assaulted her,” SPD stated in its crime blotter. “The victim sought help by calling her ex-partner to come get her.”

Officers determined that the boyfriend assaulted her via strangulation before the shooting occurred.

When the ex-partner arrived, the woman asked him to help her move out of her place, where she was currently living with her boyfriend. The boyfriend began chasing and assaulting her ex-partner, threatening to kill him. The ex-partner was armed and shot the boyfriend multiple times after he feared for his own life.

Following an interview with detectives at SPD headquarters, the shooter was released from police custody.

“Due to the earlier domestic violence incident involving the woman and her now ex-boyfriend, officers determined that he assaulted her via strangulation before the shooting occurred,” SPD stated. “Officers established probable cause to arrest him for felony assault and unlawful imprisonment.”
