WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. job market was much weaker in 2024 and early this year than originally reported, adding to concerns about the health of the U.S. economy.

The Labor Department reported Tuesday that employers added 911,000 fewer jobs than originally reported from April 2024 through March.

The department issues the so-called benchmark revisions every year. They are intended to better account for new businesses and ones that had gone out of business. The numbers issued Tuesday are preliminary. Final revisions will come out early next year.

Last year, the revisions showed 818,000 fewer jobs from April 2023 through March 2024. Then presidential candidate Donald Trump declared the numbers had been rigged to conceal economic weakness and help Democrats in the 2024 election. However, he did not explain why the government would release the revised numbers two and a half months before voters went to the polls.

Trump and Iran agree on one thing. The US election calendar isn’t driving their decisions on the war

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and Iran’s leadership appear to agree on one thing about their seven-month-old war: they each insist the U.S. election calendar isn’t motivating them to find an end to it. Persistent inflation and high gas prices fueled by the conflict have driven widespread American disapproval of the war — a […]

Boosting US oil supplies with Russian diesel unlikely to have much impact on prices, experts say

A new pact that calls for Russia to boost the U.S. supply of diesel over the next few months is unlikely to make a dent in painfully high prices at the pump or elsewhere, energy policy experts say. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he had struck a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to […]

New York prosecutors seek to sustain their case against Luigi Mangione, despite his federal plea

NEW YORK (AP) — New York prosecutors sought Friday to keep their murder case going against Luigi Mangione, arguing that his federal guilty plea shouldn’t end a separate, state-court case over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The state and federal prosecutions center on “different harms, different evils, different purposes, different crimes,” Manhattan Assistant […]
