Pierce County deputies continue to investigate standoff, shooting

A standoff between Pierce County deputies and a shooting suspect in South Hill ended after multiple hours Thursday morning.

“He was non-compliant for at least two hours. He finally did come out of the house, but that was after we’ve had SWAT arrive on scene, we’ve had K-9s arrive and negotiators,” Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carly Cappetto told KIRO Newsradio.

Investigators believe the suspect, a 20-year-old man, shot someone before barricading himself inside a home at 166th Street Court E. in South Hill.

“We don’t know what led up to this, or if this was just an act of violence, or if there was a relationship. We just don’t know,” Cappetto said.

Man in stable condition after Pierce County shooting

The shooting happened just after 7 a.m. The victim, a 48-year-old man, is stable and being treated for their wounds, as of this reporting.

Meanwhile, the investigation is still ongoing.

“We have detectives going into the home for the search warrant. There’s going to be a long investigation that goes along with this. We obviously have a fairly large home to sift through and cars to sift through,” Cappetto said.

Other people were inside the house with the suspect, but everyone exited peacefully.

The standoff was happening near Edgerton Elementary. The school decided to shut down for the day and not hold classes Thursday due to the nearby police activity.
