After previously mulling over the idea of creating a day designated for Charlie Kirk, the Lynden School District decided to table its decision in response to concerns presented at the district meeting on Thursday.

According to Board president Jim Verburg, the idea of establishing Charlie Kirk Day had not been fully vetted.

“For a variety of reasons, those things didn’t occur,” Verburg said, according to KING 5. “As president, I take responsibility for the shortsightedness. The buck stops here. This board is committed to allowing time for the Lynden community to provide input on important topics such as this.”

Kirk, a conservative activist, was shot while speaking at a college event in Utah last week — a moment the Lynden School District board said highlights the need for peaceful civic engagement. Lynden School District’s argument for the dedicated day was to encourage student debate clubs, saying they help build listening, reasoning, and leadership skills.

While most of the attendees who spoke at the meeting supported the district’s ideas to promote civil debate on campus, according to KING 5, many speakers opposed naming a day for Kirk. Some attended the meeting in support of Charlie Kirk, wearing a shirt similar to the one he wore when he was shot and killed.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 2. Further conversation regarding establishing Charlie Kirk Day may happen at this meeting.
