AquaStar is recalling more than 85,000 bags of shrimp due to the risk of contamination with radioactive material.

The FDA flagged the Aquastar products after finding insanitary conditions within Aquastar, where the products may have been contaminated with cesium-137. Cesium-137  is the radioactive form of the element cesium, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Cesium-137 is most commonly used in medical devices.

Additionally, Cesium-137 is a product of fission from nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons.

In total, 49,920 bags of “Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp,” 18,000 bags of “Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp,” and 17,264 bags of AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers were recalled.

“Cesium-137 is a man-made radioisotope of cesium. Traces of Cs-137 are widespread and can be present in the environment at background levels, and at higher levels in water or foods grown, raised, or produced in areas with environmental contamination,” the FDA wrote. “The primary health effect of concern following longer-term, repeated low-dose exposure (e.g., through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body.”

The bags of shrimp were imported from an Indonesian company, PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati. This company also imported another shrimp product that was recently recalled.

The items were sold between June 12 and Sept. 17 at several grocery stores, including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, and King Soopers. In addition to being sold in Washington, the shrimp was also sold in 30 other states.

So far, no illnesses have been reported.
