Thousands remain without power as Puget Sound recovers from powerful windstorm

Thousands of residents across the Puget Sound region remain without power after more than 150,000 homes and businesses lost power due to a powerful storm on Saturday night.

A total of 17,473 Puget Sound Energy (PSE) customers remained without power due to the heavy windstorm as of 7:20 a.m. on Monday, PSE announced.

“We understand how difficult it is to be without power and that you need information about when your power is coming back on,” PSE stated. “We are working around the clock to assess damage and make repairs, and will continue to do so until power is restored to all customers.”

PSE reported late Sunday night that its crews have made substantial progress in restoring power for customers impacted by the windstorm.

The company noted that if an outage doesn’t specify a time for power to be restored, crews must complete work in other areas before resolving additional outages.

On Sunday, PSE shared on social media that downed trees caused damage to local power lines and large transmission lines, which provide power to each community.

The transmission systems must be repaired before crews can begin to restore power on the distribution system.

PSE stated that the most damage to its transmission systems occurred between South King County and Pierce County.

Additional crews were assigned to various outage areas to work towards restoring power.

Early Sunday morning, more than 138,000 PSE customers were out of power due to heavy winds and fallen trees across the region.

Weekend windstorm turns fatal in Pierce County

One person died and several others were injured at a Halloween event at McKenna Park on Saturday after a tree fell on multiple event booths.

Deputies responded at approximately 1:00 p.m. and found as many as seven people trapped underneath the fallen tree. Three of the victims were transported to the hospital.

A 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and multiple others sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.
