Lockdown lifted at Burien high school after an alleged assault took place

Highline High School in Burien has just lifted its lockdown after nearly two hours on Monday.

The school was placed in lockdown just before 1 p.m. after reports were received of a person with a weapon inside the school, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office. The reports came from online rumors, according to the school.

By 2:31 p.m., law enforcement completed a thorough search of the building. Officers reported that a felony assault had taken place against one student. A firearm was involved, but was not discharged. Three suspects involved in the incident are in custody, as of this reporting.

“Students and staff are safe. Dismissal is proceeding in waves, and staff are supporting students as they leave campus,” Highline School stated. “Some buses may be delayed due to traffic and police activity in the area.”

Students were initially shuffled into the school’s gymnasium, with no dismissals allowed until the search was completed. According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred outside of the school.

“We are grateful for the calm and cooperation of our students and staff, and for the swift, professional response from law enforcement,” Highline School stated.

A heavy police presence will be present on campus for an intermediate amount of time.
