Ten live hand grenades were found by a renovation crew inside an Olalla home Monday, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. The grenades were found alongside other explosive devices.

Contractors were working on the home when they discovered the case and the explosives inside. The homeowners, who were not at the house during construction, were immediately contacted by the workers.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office notified Washington State Patrol’s (WSP) bomb technicians, while an explosive ordinance team from Naval Submarine Base Bangor was also called to the scene.

“Ten grenades were found and bomb technicians determined they contained TNT, a powerful explosive,” the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office stated. “The explosive technicians also located blasting caps and other explosive devices.”

Olalla Valley Road S.E. was closed to traffic for public safety.

The homeowners claimed they did not know about the explosives case, telling Kitsap County deputies they had just purchased the property.

The explosive ordinance team determined the grenades were military issue. An investigation by the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office is underway to determine how the explosives came to be on the property.
