A multi-vehicle crash on Sunday resulted in five people being hospitalized, according to the Puyallup Police Department, including a 4-year-old who is in critical condition.

The crash happened at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of 31st Ave S.W. and SR 512 in Puyallup.

What led to the dangerous accident

A Puyallup police officer initially tried to contact a man in a suspicious vehicle in a business parking lot along 31st Avenue S.E. The driver sped out of the parking lot, with the officer choosing not to follow.

Just minutes later, a serious collision at the intersection of 31st Avenue S.W. and the SR 512 eastbound on-ramp occurred. Officers quickly determined that the vehicle the officer had attempted to stop was the same one that caused the collision.

The crash happened after the driver allegedly ran a red light and hit another vehicle turning left onto the SR 512 eastbound on-ramp. Inside the car that was struck was a family of four, all of whom needed to go to the hospital. A 4-year-old who was in the vehicle is currently in critical condition, as of this reporting.

One person needed to be extricated by firefighters, according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The driver who allegedly caused the crash, a 21-year-old man from Graham, needed to go to the hospital as well. He is under investigation for vehicular assault.
