Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has postponed the planned removal of a homeless encampment in Ballard after visiting the site. In a statement, she said more time was needed to evaluate the city’s approach.

The Ballard encampment — located near NW 41st Street and the Burke‑Gilman Trail — is home to roughly 17 people living in about 10 tents and makeshift shelters, according to KOMO News. The site sits in an industrial area and does not obstruct public access, according to advocates.

Wilson said she extended the deadline for clearing the encampment so her administration can further assess whether the city can “improve outcomes for the people living there, for their neighbors, and for local businesses.” She added that her administration will soon announce steps to speed up the expansion of emergency shelter and move quickly to open additional space.

We Heart Seattle founder urges action on Ballard encampment

Andrea Suarez, founder of the nonprofit We Heart Seattle, recorded a video message from the site of the encampment and said the city needs to act now.

“This, from my perspective, will be a tragedy if these encampments continue to stay,” Suarez said. “It’s a ticking time bomb for the community, whether it’s fires, crime, assault, theft.”

The mayor emphasized the need to balance compassionate outreach with maintaining public spaces. She said some situations will still require encampment removals to ensure sidewalks, parks, and other areas remain clean and accessible.

“For too long, we have spent too much time and too many resources on approaches that have not been successful at addressing our homelessness crisis,” Wilson said. “It’s time for that to change.”

The city has not announced a new timeline for the Ballard encampment decision.
