Fire crews in Renton found a person dead inside a home that caught fire on Friday evening.

A man apparently was trapped inside the home.

Neighbors said they tried to rescue him, even breaking a window with a sledgehammer just before fire crews arrived.

Sadly, despite those efforts, the man died.

Puget Sound Fire and Renton firefighters say they were called out to the fire at a home on 138th Ave. S.E. in Fairwood, about a mile west of Lake Youngs.

A neighbor told KIRO-7 T-V he saw flames inside the house and tried knocking on a window to alert the man who lives there.

“I ran down to the front door and when I looked inside the window all that I saw was fire,” the neighbor said.  “So I banged on the window, yelling Greg’s name.  I tried to stay in the moment as much as I could and keep my composure.”

The neighbor credited fire crews for arriving quickly to help find the victim.

“These guys here, great job,” he said.  “They showed up really quick and we did everything we could.”

Fire crews immediately searched the house and found the victim, then got him out of the house.

Soon after, medics pronounced the person dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the King County Sheriff Office.
