Law enforcement is investigating after an inmate was found dead at the Kitsap County Jail.

Around 5 a.m. Friday, corrections officers were conducting a routine check when they found a 36-year-old man unresponsive in his cell, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported via Facebook.

Jail medical staff responded, and both corrections officers and medical personnel began CPR until South Kitsap Fire and Rescue arrived.

Emergency responders determined the man had died.

The Port Orchard Police Department was notified and is conducting an independent investigation.

The sheriff’s office noted the Kitsap County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death and is responsible for notifying the next of kin.
