By day, it’s a region long known for vineyard-covered hillsides, rushing rivers and Gold Rush history. But as the sun sets over pear orchards and wine country, another scene is emerging by night, and that’s speakeasies.

Across Southern Oregon, a new wave of lounges is blending craft mixology with vintage glamour and locally inspired flavors. This growing nightlife scene is both elevated and deeply rooted in Southern Oregon history, and we’ve got three places you can explore on your next wine-inspired road trip.

Hidden in Plain Sight: Butterfly Club

At first glance, it looks like a barbershop connected to an upscale restaurant in downtown Medford. But hidden behind a secret door lies one of Southern Oregon’s most talked-about nightlife experiences.

Reservation-only and password-protected, Butterfly Club fully commits to the roaring ’20s fantasy. Guests call ahead, receive a password and are escorted through the working barbershop entrance into a dimly lit lounge where jazz-era vibes take over. Many of the guests even arrive with a 1920s glam look.

Owner Adam Benson said the idea was born after visiting his first speakeasy in Las Vegas. “I came back knowing that I wanted to open one,” he shared.

The name itself came from a fictional 1920s club Benson encountered while watching a show, paired with inspiration from monarch butterfly conservation efforts. Today, butterfly décor fills the lounge, and cocktails even borrow butterfly-inspired names.

The cocktail program leans theatrical, with their signature drink being Smoked and Petaled—a twist on an Old Fashioned—that arrives beneath a smoking dome alongside a hollowed-out book concealing a flask of liquor guests pour themselves.

Benson recently shifted the food menu into “Bugsy’s Steakhouse,” featuring classic steakhouse fare and high-end West Coast beef. The lounge also offers elevated mocktails, ensuring non-drinkers can still enjoy the full experience.

Vintage Vibes at The Blind Tiger Medicine Room

Just 15 minutes away, The Blind Tiger Medicine Room sits beneath Jefferson Spirits in Jacksonville. Inside Jacksonville’s historic 1880s U.S. Hotel building, Jefferson Spirits is a history-inspired bar lounge, you’ll even see a Thomas Jefferson quote upon entry. Step downstairs and you’ll find what they call an “Ode to Prohibition,” where speakeasy themes and handcrafted cocktails take the spotlight. The name itself pays homage to the Prohibition era: “blind tiger” was slang for an illegal drinking establishment where authorities often unofficially “turned a blind eye” to underground alcohol sales and hidden bars operating behind closed doors. Try their Old Fashioned, a Caffeine Disco that’s an Espresso Martini with an Earl Grey addition, or a Pear Oolong, a nod to the region’s famous pear industry.

Password Required at Cooks Speakeasy

Down in Ashland, the speakeasy scene gets even more playful.

At Cooks Speakeasy, guests need the correct password—posted weekly on the venue’s website—to gain entry. Once inside, the hidden lounge transforms into an intimate nightlife escape complete with cocktails, karaoke and a tucked-away atmosphere that feels miles away from the bustle outside.

Located in the heart of Ashland, it’s the kind of place where visitors can wrap up a day at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival before slipping into a more secretive side of town.
