A man and child were injured earlier this week after an incident with a black bear, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

The WDFW wrote in a statement that they received word about the encounter around 11:30 a.m. Monday, but the actual incident happened the night before, Sunday, Sept. 13.

WDFW also notes that it happened “on the property of a residence outside of Bellingham.”

The two individuals had their injuries treated at a nearby hospital, according to WDFW.

As of Sept. 15, the WDFW are still looking for the black bear and trying to capture it. They are also increasing patrols in Whatcom County.

If you do run into a bear, the WDFW encourages you to avoid running away and instead, make yourself known to the animal.

“If a bear walks toward you, identify yourself as a human by standing up, waving your hands above your head, and talking in a low voice,” WDFW writes. “Back away, avoiding direct eye contact. Don’t run from a bear. WDFW recommends making noise and leashing pets while hiking. Be aware of your surroundings as to not accidentally startle a bear.”

KIRO 7 has reached out to WDFW for further comment.
