Rob Foxcurran holds a commanding early lead in the race to become King County’s first new assessor in more than a decade.

Foxcurran received 72.3% of votes counted in Tuesday’s initial returns, giving him a wide lead over Dominique Scarimbolo.

Foxcurran campaigns on property tax relief and housing affordability

Foxcurran is a lifelong King County resident who serves as an appraiser for the city of Seattle and a hearing examiner on the King County Board of Appeals and Equalization.

“I have a background that pairs well with this role, so I think people can believe me when I say that I know what I’m doing,” Foxcurran told The Seattle Times.

Foxcurran campaigned on homestead protections to help homeowners manage rising costs and a renter tax credit to provide relief from increasing housing expenses.

“The Assessor’s office touches every person’s ability to stay in their home,” Foxcurran stated. “Rising property taxes are pushing homeowners, renters, and small businesses out of their communities, and too many people don’t trust that the system is treating them fairly. King County needs an accurate, fair, and transparent Assessor’s office that works for everyone.”

Foxcurran also supported a land-value tax, which would tax land rather than the structures built on it.

“Rob knows firsthand how rising costs and unfair tax systems push people out,” his campaign stated. “He has lived in [Multi-Family Tax Exemption] housing himself, understands the real pressures families face, and believes local government must do everything possible to keep people housed and make King County a place where working families can thrive.”

Scarimbolo calls for faster appeals and greater transparency

Scarimbolo has no prior experience in property appraisal but campaigned on speeding up property valuation appeals, according to The Seattle Times. She also advocated eliminating property taxes, making valuations more transparent and responsibly managing taxpayer dollars.

“I have personally experienced how confusing and frustrating the property tax system can be,” Scarimbolo wrote. “After filing property tax appeals, reviewing assessment data, and researching mass appraisal practices, I became convinced that King County needs a more transparent, accountable, and uniform assessment system, and that it starts with leadership willing to ask hard questions.”

Scarimbolo is a lifelong Washington resident who graduated from Washington State University and later operated several small businesses, including Four Horsemen Brewery.

“I’m running for King County Assessor because property owners deserve a system they can understand, challenge fairly, and trust,” her campaign stated. “The Assessor is not simply an appraiser. It is a leadership role, and leadership means asking whether the system is actually working for the people it serves.”

Candidates vie to succeed longtime assessor John Wilson

The race to succeed John Wilson, who has served as King County assessor since 2015, follows allegations that he stalked and harassed his former partner, Lee Keller, and subsequent calls for his resignation.

Wilson was charged with two counts of violating a court order. The charges were later dismissed after Keller declined to cooperate.

In October, Wilson announced he would not seek re-election after officials called for his resignation.

“It is clear that John Wilson needs to address his ongoing and escalating behavior and resign as county assessor,” King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci previously wrote in a statement in response to Wilson’s arrest. “Alongside advocates for survivors of violence and intimate partner abuse, I have repeatedly called for Wilson to step aside. For too long, we have allowed people in positions of power to be shielded from accountability for abusive behavior. The people and employees of King County deserve better from their leadership.”

Wilson denied the stalking allegations on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio last year.

“Yeah, my name is on the ballot,” he previously said. “And frankly, I know in my heart, I know that the facts, not the allegations, the facts will clear up that I did nothing to put her in danger. That I did not stalk her in some way. That she was in fear for [her] life. That I was abusive to her — just the opposite.”
