Little Beast, the British pub in Ballard that drew national attention in its first year, will stop regular restaurant service at the end of 2026. The owners said rising costs have made a small restaurant impossible to run at a fair price.

Starting in January, the space at 5107 Ballard Ave. NW will focus on the owners’ butcher box program, cooking classes, and other events. The owners announced the change on Instagram. Special dinners will continue, but “on occasion rather than every night.”

“The reason is simple math,” the owners stated. “Labor and food costs have climbed to the point where a small restaurant can’t charge a fair price and come close to breaking even.”

Changes weren’t enough

The owners said they tried to make the restaurant work. They simplified the menu, cut labor costs by more than 30%, and saw walk-ins and reservations jump nearly 60% within weeks. That increase has held, but they concluded: “The numbers still don’t work.”

They said they could have cut costs by buying meat from large commodity producers.

“It would mean abandoning our principles, as well as the farmers and ranchers who raise meat the right way. We won’t do that,” they wrote.

“We’re not changing what we believe in,” they added. “We’re changing the shape of the business around it.”

An award-winning first year

Little Beast opened in 2025 in the former Ballard Pizza Company space, according to My Ballard. It’s a spinoff of Beast & Cleaver, the Loyal Heights butcher shop that co-owners Kevin Smith and Polly Yakovich opened in 2019.

Seattle Met named Little Beast its Restaurant of the Year a few months after it opened. In January, the restaurant was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best New Restaurant.

The pub was known for English fare like Scotch eggs, sausage rolls, meat pies and a Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding. Its thick cheeseburger was also a favorite of KIRO host Gee Scott.

Last chance for dinner

This is the second time this year the owners have scaled back sit-down dining. In the spring, Beast & Cleaver paused dinner service at Le Beastro, its tasting-menu concept, to focus on the butcher shop. At the time, the owners cited rising food, staffing, and health care costs, according to My Ballard.

Little Beast will serve dinner Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for the rest of the year. It has already dropped Sunday service. The owners said some favorite dishes may show up at Beast & Cleaver in the new year.
