A Renton Fire Department (RFD) firefighter was shot while responding to a call at an Albertson’s parking lot on Thursday night.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., Renton police officers responded to assist with an unconscious person in a vehicle in the 4600 block of NE Sunset Boulevard, the Renton Police Department (RPD) announced.
When officers arrived on scene, they heard a gunshot, and the bullet struck a firefighter. Officers returned fire and killed the suspect.
“Horrific situation no firefighter should ever find themselves in,” RFD stated. “Please keep our member in your thoughts and prayers.”
The firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
RPD noted the scene remains active, and surrounding roads were closed, including Duvall Avenue NE at NE Sunset.
The investigation is being turned over to the Valley Independent Investigative Team due to the nature of it being an officer-involved shooting.
“Thank you to our RPD family for their quick actions to prevent any further injuries to civilians or other members,” RFD stated.
