Snow dusts greater Seattle area as band of moisture moves north

A band of moisture pushed north Thursday night and left a dusting of snow in the Puget Sound region, including downtown Seattle. A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Cascades of Pierce and Lewis Counties until 6 p.m. Friday, with potential snow accumulations of 5-10 inches.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said major roads were “pretty much bare” of snow early Friday but things have changed as the morning has gone on.

KIRO Radio’s Chris Sullivan reports that east of Mill Creek, neighborhoods received about 1 inch of snow.
On Thursday night, people from Kirkland and Sammamish to Boeing Field, West Seattle, Mercer Island, and North Seattle reported snow. However, the snow shouldn’t stick around long. Temperatures are warming up and turning the snow to rain.
KIRO 7 meteorologist Morgan Palmer says pockets of snow may stick around and mix with rain or even freezing rain Friday morning. WSDOT tweeted Friday at 7:30 a.m. that there were gusty winds and poor visibility in Snoqualmie, with snow and ice on roadway with areas of drifting snow. WSDOT also reported compact snow and ice on the roadway in Blewett. The National Weather Service Seattle cautioned drivers heading to Vancouver, British Columbia because of expected snow.
WSDOT advised traction tires be used on all mountain passes.
On Friday afternoon, Palmer says we should see periods of rain and the snow level will rise to above 1,000 feet. Some areas of northern Whatcom County may get snow at lower elevations.
Western Washington could see another shot of snow Sunday night into Monday morning. Forecasters say warmer and wetter weather will return Tuesday and into the middle of next week.
In the Cascades, 1 to 3 feet of snow could fall by the end of the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Snow will fall heaviest on Saturday.
