After spending months hyping May 1 as a day of resistance against President Donald Trump, Councilmember Kshama Sawant said Monday that May Day is actually the start of a “summer of resistance.”

“In my mind, when you look at history, you don’t win victories by just one protest…” Sawant said. “In my mind, May Day should be a beginning of a summer of resistance.”

Seattle’s Socialist councilmember took a break from the May Day march in Seattle to chat with Conservative Michael Medved. The international march highlights workers’ and immigrants’ rights. Many people have hyped the march as also being a demonstration against the Trump administration.

“May Day, May 1, today has historically been International Workers Day, and in America also a day for immigrants’ rights protests,” Sawant said. “But this year there is a special significance … in many, many cities, working people, young people, millennials are marching out against Trump’s agenda of hatred, bigotry, anti-immigrant, anti-worker policies, and anti-women ideas.”

The council member explained that the marchers do not want to harm ordinary workers with the march that can hamper traffic, but said that advancing workers’ rights never has come by asking billionaires nicely.

You can hear Sawant explain her political goals and agenda to fight against Trump over the coming years below.
