Father and son at the Mariners game -- making memories. (Don O'Neill)

(Don O'Neill)

This week has reminded us all of the old Tesla song that proclaims, “It’s not what you got, it’s what you give.”

I have tried to teach my son that the stuff we gather in life is not important. It’s the memories we create, collect, and celebrate that will stay with us for life, and even beyond our lifetime.

Hope for Houston: Help us help those affected by Hurricane Harvey

Think about someone you miss that is no longer with us for a minute. Is it the stuff they had that you remember or was it the memory created when you were together that makes you smile, cry, laugh, and reminisce?

We are watching people on our TV screens lose everything in Hurricane Harvey, and many of the important things can’t be repurchased, duplicated, or replaced. It is heartbreaking, but as you can see, most of the people interviewed aren’t letting the loss of things define them.

What they will remember is the complete stranger that went and bought a boat three days ago and has been rolling through the streets in southeast Texas saving lives. They will remember pet advocates showing up and saving the pets they have been separated from, so that they might be reunited in a post-Harvey world. They will also remember people like you that skipped a latte or a lunch this week so you could send some Hope to Houston in the form of cash, a card, or a teddy bear.

I used to care a lot about my stuff. I didn’t have a lot growing up, so I started accumulating stuff. In my post-Katrina life, I have learned to let it go. I try to spend more time collecting memories, not mementos.

Let’s all go make a memory and thanks to all you for texting HOPE to 98973.

I’ll see you on the radio at 3.
