In what could be called somewhat of a surprise, a wealthy,
high-powered Democratic donor is now putting some money
behind Republican Rob McKenna’s gubernatorial campaign.

The Seattle Times reports Costco
co-founder Jeff Brotman and his wife Susan have donated
$5,000 to McKenna. It’s uncharacteristic, considering the
Brotman’s have been among Washington’s most generous
Democratic donors.

The Brotmans hosted President Obama at their house for a
$17,900 a person fundraiser in February. Susan Brotman is
credited with raising $427,150 for Obama’s reelection
effort, according to the Times.

The Public Disclosure Commission reports the couple have
not
donated anything to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay
Inslee, although they have given to his previous
congressional campaigns.

Jeff Brotman served on the Board of Regents at
the University of Washington and a McKenna campaign
manager confirms the pair met recently to discuss
education funding.
