By default, Tom and Curley among nation’s most handsome men

Perhaps it’s a clean shirt and new shoes, a trimmed beard or a dapper do. Guys are spending money as fast as they can because the Internet’s gone crazy over sharp-dressed men.

Seattle’s men to be exact.

The Grooming Lounge blog, recently gave Seattle men something to feel proud of, claiming the Emerald City beats out all other U.S. cities when it comes to being handsome.

The blog post has quickly gone viral. It takes into account a range of manly factors, such as the fittest cities in the nation, along with money spent on personal services and products, apparel, and shaving needs.

The blog notes that handsomeness can be relative, but the numbers indicate who in America is committed to their appearance. Seattle topped the list of 25 cities, followed closely by San Francisco and Washington D.C.

The second Northwest city that made the list was Portland, which came in at 14.

“We spend, on average, $3,500 a year on personal care items and $3,700 on apparel,” said KIRO Radio’s Tom Tangney. “That comes out to over $7,000 a year that men spend on looking good.”

“Shaving needs, they say, come out to be about $157 a year and you think that would be the biggest item. If that is that low, what else are they spending on?” he said.

To put that into contrast, men of Cleveland spend about $2,366 on personal care products. Seattle spent the most money on apparel, followed by products, then services.

While Seattle is ahead of the pack in spending, Tom and Curley would not be included in that pack.

“I use soap to wash my hair,” Curley said, who doesn’t even live in Seattle.

Tom is a little more advanced, but only a little.
“I use a little shampoo. I like the one that combines [shampoo and conditioner] so you don’t have to wash as much,” Tom said.

Curley, however, is testing the waters with minor products.

“I spent $45 the other day on cologne,” Curley said. “I know cologne has sort of gone passé, but I looked up online at Esquire magazine, ‘best cologne,’ and I bought it.”

“You should be smelling hints of citrus, now smell the back of my neck,” Curley requested of Tom. “Isn’t that nice?”

But Curley noted that the reason for his cologne purchase doesn’t have to do with being a handsome man.

“When my dad used to come in the morning and say good morning to me &#8212 that smell of my father, it was Bay Rum from Brooks Brothers &#8212 would fill the whole house,” he said. “And even if I didn’t see him, that smell would fill the whole house.

“And my daughter said, ‘Dad, I love the way you smell in the morning,'” Curley said. “So I bought it primarily for my kid so in 40 years from now she can be, ‘I remember dad smelled a certain way.'”
