Threat against New Mexico school shuts down Bremerton High School

Feb 23, 2018, 7:37 AM | Updated: 10:21 am

Bremerton High School was closed Friday due to a threat made against a high school in New Mexico.

The threat, made on social media, contained the abbreviation “BHS.” It caused concern in Bremerton, and many other schools across the nation with the initials. Bremerton High School closed as a result.

Check school closings

Though the threat against Bremerton High was unverified early Friday morning, “safety is our top priority, we are evaluating the situation and canceling classes as a precaution,” a statement read.

According to the Bremerton Police Department, the suspect linked to that threat is already in custody.

Another threat in Blaine

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate threat made against the Blaine School District.

“While we await the analysis of the authenticity of the threat, it has been determined that, in the primary interest of the welfare of staff, students and patrons … all schools in the Blaine School District will be closed,” a statement read.

The precautionary closures come just over a week since a man opened fire at a Florida high school, killing 17 people.

One day after the Feb. 14 Florida shooting, a student at Seattle’s Garfield High School was arrested for allegedly threatening to shoot his classmates. A staff member dismissed the threat, but actions taken by concerned students led to his arrest.
