Shower thoughts: Seahawks, the season, and woodturning

Mar 14, 2018, 3:57 PM | Updated: 3:58 pm

Well today is supposed to be my weekly shower thoughts column, but there’s a water main shut off in my building. So this week it’s imaginary shower thoughts.

RELATED: Thoughts on daylight saving time

Pro tip: if there is water coming through your ceiling, try to not wait an hour before turning off the main. Plumbers are super cheap at 7 a.m., am I right?

Northwest spring

Man, wasn’t Spring great? All 30 hours of it. I took full advantage and had a taco on a waterside deck. Even though it was a Monday.

#YOLO.

Daylight Saving Time

As much as I profess my love for Daylight Savings Time, is there anyone else who’s sleep pattern is jacked? I always forget about the week or so it takes for my body to adjust. But I’m still all-in on it being my favorite day of the year.

Seahawks

So, have you figured out what the Seattle Seahawks are doing? Me either. I guess Coach Pete and GM John Schneider have earned the right for the 12s to trust them, but it sure feels like a fire sale to me. I’m mentally preparing for a 6-10 season. There has been exactly one franchise that has been able to reload midstream and still win: The New England Patriots. Every other team, not so much.

Woodturning

We’re entering week number three of my woodturning class. When I tell people I’m doing this I get reactions ranging from an eye roll and chortle to an enthusiastic “hell yes!” I think many people don’t know what I’m talking about. I am basically taking a chunk of solid wood, mounting it on a lathe, then using tools to carve away all the parts that don’t look like a bowl as the wood spins at around a thousand RPM.

Nerdy– definitely. But I’m really enjoying it. I hope I don’t destroy the one I’ve been working on tonight. I really want it to turn out nice.

Serious laughter

On a serious note: I have a friend who visited this week from Dallas.

His wife has stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer. So a few times a year we get together and I try my best to make him laugh. They have been very public with their struggle. His wife’s message is to trust your instincts. If a doctor gives you a diagnosis and it just doesn’t sit right with you, fight for a second opinion. Sometimes that rash on your breast you fear could be serious, is serious. Keep fighting Jen.

Love over cancer.

I jokingly used the rallying cry of the millennial YOLO earlier. It stands for “you only live once.” Actually, it’s not a bad motto. Go out there and live.

Oh wait, the emergency plumber just got here. I might get a shower after all.

You can hear “What are we talking about here?” everyday at 4:45 p.m. on 97.3 FM.
