...

Traffic backed up for miles on southbound I-5 Wednesday morning after a four-car crash between Everett and Marysville.

The cause, according to the Washington State Patrol, was two separate crashes.

The first crash occurred when a car rear-ended one vehicle, pushing it into another. The causing driver received a ticket for following too close.

After that, a speeding vehicle crashed into the three vehicles involved in the previous crash. The driver received a ticket for speeding and driving with a suspended license.

The crashes occurred north of Highway 2 around 5:50 a.m.

By 6:20 a.m., traffic was backed up 6.5 miles to SR 528.

The travel time from Marysville to Everett was nearly an hour. The average commute time is normally eight minutes.

“This is going to hurt for a while,” the Washington State Department of Transportation tweeted.

All lanes reopened just before 7 a.m.
