Beast quake: Seahawks fans rock stadium again

Jan 13, 2014, 7:04 AM | Updated: Sep 30, 2024, 11:08 am

Seismologists say Seahawks fans shook the ground under the Seattle football stadium during Saturday’s defeat of the New Orleans Saints, causing another fan-generated earthquake, or “beast quake.”

Three seismographs were spread throughout the stadium, one was at field level under the east stands, another on the second level of the west stands, and the third was in a building just to the west of the stadium.

The scientists believe the small earthquake during a Marshawn Lynch touchdown was likely greater than his infamous “beast quake” run three years ago.

John Vidale of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington told The Seattle Times they will know for sure in a few days.

Seismologists attempted to share results of the experiment in real-time, however they say on their website the real-time feed was turned off at 3:40 p.m. because of “very poor service.”

In 2011, fans jumped and stomped their way to magnitude 1 or 2 earthquake. Scientists also recorded another Seahawks quake during a December game against New Orleans.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
