FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) — Officials say a Washington State Patrol trooper was struck by a vehicle and injured during a traffic stop in Federal Way.

Patrol officials say Trooper Greg Ulrich was contacting a driver he had stopped for a traffic violation Wednesday morning on northbound Interstate 5 when another vehicle hit him from behind.

Trooper Chris Webb says Ulrich was taken to Harborview Medical Center with leg and back injuries and was listed in good condition Wednesday afternoon. Ulrich has been with the patrol for 25 years.

Webb says the 28-year-old woman who hit Ulrich was not impaired. Investigators believe driver inattention was a factor in the incident.

Washington law requires drivers approaching an emergency zone to move to another lane if safe to do so or to proceed with caution and reduce speed.
