The Arlington Police Department (APD) is warning residents and businesses to be on the lookout for an organized crime ring targeting businesses and residents.

Police said the ring consists mostly of people from Southeastern Europe.

APD stated the group poses as stranded motorists trying to sell gold jewelry.

Officers added that the ring shoplifts — using children as a distraction and disguising their identities to scam and steal from individuals and businesses.

“It’s not something that’s unique to Arlington,” Arlington Police Chief Jonathan Ventura said. “They’ve been in Mount Vernon, Everett, Issaquah, Bothell, other cities. Clearly there is some organization.”

Ventura said people in the group often stand on entrance ramps on Interstate 5 (I-5), claiming to be in desperate need of help. But, he said, his officers have made contact with some and followed them as they return to luxury cars.

So far, there has been no violence reported, and no arrests have been made.

“One of the best parts about living and working in this community is the heart of our community, and it’s also one of our biggest detriments,” Ventura said.

Police encourage business owners and residents alike: if you see something, say something — call 911.
