High school cross-country runner hit by truck in Puyallup

A high school cross-country athlete was hit by a truck during a team run Monday afternoon in Puyallup.
Multiple members of the Puyallup High School cross-country team were running along 2nd Ave N.E. just before 4 p.m. Monday when one student-athlete entered the intersection of 7th Street N.E. and 2nd Ave N.E. and was struck by a truck.
The cross-country runner suffered serious injuries from the accident.
“I was almost to the stop sign, and he had already stepped into the street. It looked like he put his hand up to the truck,” Jessica Orth, a nearby witness, told KIRO 7. “And he fell and slid a little bit on the gravel. His eyes were in the back of his head, and he was not conscious or speaking at that time.”
The truck driver, 27, is cooperating with police. Responding police officers ruled he was not impaired at the time of the crash, but was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor charge.
