One man is dead after deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office responded to a suspicious vehicle in the Puyallup South Hill area following reports of gunfire.

The vehicle’s description matched the description of a suspect’s vehicle from a previous incident where deputies had established probable cause to arrest the driver, according to a news release from the Pierce County Force Investigation Team (PCFIT).

The suspicious vehicle was located in the 8500 block of 156th Court E. in Puyallup. Deputies were called to the car just after 2 a.m. Dec. 29.

“The reporting party stated the man in the vehicle had earlier fired a shot outside their home,” Pierce County Deputy Carly Cappetto stated. “When deputies arrived, they located the vehicle with the male asleep inside. Deputies spoke with the victims and established probable cause for felony harassment.”

Shortly after deputies made contact with the suspect in the vehicle, reports of shots fired were issued.

“They located the vehicle with the male asleep inside, deputies attempted contact with the male inside the vehicle, and shortly later called out shots had been fired,” Cappetto stated.

Deputies attempted life-saving measures prior to Pierce County Fire arriving, but the male suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured in the shooting.

Following standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting, the PCFIT will lead the investigation.
