A long-time teaching assistant in Edmonds was arrested for allegedly having a years-long inappropriate relationship with a student.
The arrest came after a parent discovered text messages between the 46-year-old teaching assistant and her 15-year-old child, both of whom attended Edmonds-Woodway High School. The parent described the text messages as “concerning,” according to the Edmonds Police Department.
“Those messages showed what appeared to be an ongoing sexual relationship between their daughter and a teaching assistant,” the Edmonds Police Department stated. “The assistant is a 46-year-old man from the unincorporated Edmonds area. The assistant has been working with the victim for many years. Initial details show inappropriate contact has likely been going on for close to five years.”
The teaching assistant was arrested at his home on Jan. 19. He was booked into Snohomish County Jail for third-degree rape of a child and for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
The Edmonds School District was notified immediately and began its internal processes.
“We will also investigate to determine if other students have been victimized by the suspect,” the Edmonds Police Department said.
