Man shot by Federal Way police after brandishing a gun at Commons shopping mall

A man was shot and killed by Federal Way police Thursday evening after officers said he pointed a weapon at them outside The Commons mall.
According to the Federal Way Police Department, around 6:40 p.m., multiple 911 callers reported that a man was armed with a gun and pointing it at people in the parking lot.
The man was described as white and in his 20s or 30s. One caller said he was waiting for police.
Federal Way officers arrived shortly afterward and attempted to contact the man. Police said he pointed a weapon at officers, who then fired their guns and struck him.
Officers and medical personnel provided aid, but the man died from his injuries. He has not been identified.
No officers or bystanders were injured.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave under department policy.
The Valley Independent Investigation Team (VIIT) will conduct the investigation into the shooting. Federal Way police said the department will not be involved in that investigation and will not release additional information about the incident.
VIIT will provide future updates on the investigation.
Police said the information is preliminary and could change as more details become available.
