8-year-old girl evades attempted kidnapping in West Seattle; suspect arrested

A 22-year-old man was arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly attempting to kidnap an 8-year-old girl in West Seattle.

At approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, officers with the Seattle Police Department (SPD) were called to respond to reports of a young man trying to take a young girl while she was playing in the front yard of a home with her friends. When police arrived, the girl was unharmed, but was reportedly “terrified.”

According to the probable cause statement obtained by KIRO 7, the 22-year-old suspect “gripped her arm and attempted to pull her further down the driveway and behind the neighbor’s home.” The suspect then pulled her “with his left hand while holding a knife in his other hand.”

The girl managed to escape after screaming and alerting the adults, prompting the suspect to run off.

Suspect arrested the following day

After the suspect fled the scene before police arrived, officers gathered video evidence from neighborhood security cameras.

By Sunday afternoon, officers found a man matching the suspect’s description and arrested him. He’s currently booked at King County Jail for investigation of kidnapping.
