What began as a report of a man chasing his father with a chainsaw ended with deputies using a lasso to bring him under control.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Pierce County.

Deputies said the man jumped into a pond with the chainsaw and refused to come out.

“When deputies arrived, they learned that the 32-year-old son had been involved in a verbal altercation and had begun threatening both of his parents with a chainsaw,” the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said on its blotter. “Negotiations went on for about 40 minutes before deputies retrieved a 40 mm beanbag shotgun and a trusty lasso. Just as deputies exhausted all attempts to get the suspect out of the pond, a deputy was able to successfully lasso the male and drag him safely to shore.”

The man was taken to a local hospital for mental health services.
