One person is dead and another is in custody after a lengthy standoff in Seattle on Saturday.

The standoff occurred after a stabbing happened just before 12 p.m. Saturday near a group home at the intersection of Aurora Avenue and 84th Street in North Seattle.

“At 11:45 a.m., patrol officers responded to reports of threats with a knife in the 1100 block of North 84th Street,” the Seattle Police Department (SPD) stated, according to a blog post on the Seattle Police Blotter. “There, police found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries inside a house.”

The victim from the stabbing incident died from his injuries at the scene, police said.

Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside the home and refused to come out. The standoff lasted for hours, with nearby roads taped off and armored vehicles rolling through the neighborhood, according to KIRO 7. Officers pointed rifles at the home where the suspect was hiding.

“SPD’s SWAT team arrived and assumed tactical command of the scene,” the post said. “After nearly five hours of negotiation, the suspect exited the residence, and SWAT arrested him after using less-lethal tools.”

The suspect and victim knew each other, according to SPD, but it is not clear what led up to the stabbing, as of this reporting.

“Our police officers and SWAT team established a safety perimeter while the negotiations ensued,” Muñoz told KIRO 7. “Ultimately, the SWAT team employed less-lethal munitions, and the suspect exited the residence. SWAT took him into police custody, and that’s where we are now.”

Police said the suspect, a 51-year-old man, was booked into King County Jail for investigation of murder.

The King County Medical Examiner will determine how the victim died.
