A Pierce County woman is accused of stealing hundreds of Amazon packages estimated to be worth $20,000 in total.

The woman allegedly stole the packages while working as a delivery driver. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office uncovered this vast theft after deputies were called to a home in Parkland on April 5 over concerns about “hundreds of Amazon packages” scattered along the backside of a garage.

“If you did not receive your Amazon package, this may be the reason why,” the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office wrote. “It turned out the female suspect was a Flex Driver for Amazon while using her personal vehicle to deliver packages.”

Instead of delivering the packages, she would collect payment from Amazon, claim they were undeliverable, and not deliver them. She would then store the packages in her home. She used her personal vehicle to “make” the deliveries.

According to Pierce County Deputy Carly Cappetto, she blamed a lack of gas money for failing to make the deliveries.

“Suddenly, she was out of gas money to deliver the packages,” Cappetto told KIRO 7. “It was easier to not deliver them and go home with the packages, than go back for a second load of packages for another payment. Then it got out of control from there.”

Most were returned to Amazon, but just under half remain unaccounted for. Approximately $8,000 worth of packages remain missing. The 48-year-old suspect claimed that they were stolen from her house.

She was arrested for first-degree felony theft. An Amazon spokesperson told KIRO 7 that the company is looking into the incident.
