A domestic violence call in Puyallup ended with a deadly explosion.

The Puyallup Police Department reported a 46-year-old man forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, assaulted her, then fled before officers tracked him to a home near Sumner Wednesday night.

“A 46-year-old male had forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment before tackling her to the ground and punching her in the head,” the Puyallup Police Department stated. “The male initially prevented the female from calling 911, but then fled when she regained her phone and called police.”

After a lengthy standoff, police deployed pepper balls and a K-9 while trying to make an arrest.

“The suspect eventually came outside but would not comply with officers,” the department wrote in a social media post. “Officers attempted to negotiate with the male for an extended period, and Sumner Police deployed a drone to monitor his movements.”

Then, as officers moved in to arrest the male suspect, he detonated an explosive device, killing himself. Four officers and a police K-9 were in range of the blast and were transported to a local hospital for possible injuries.

The Puyallup Police Department Investigative Services Unit is investigating, as of this reporting. The Hazardous Devices (Bomb) Squad from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office was also called in to assist with the investigation.
