A 911 caller in Redmond offered some “late-night vigilance” as he helped stop a potentially dangerous situation.

On April 12, at approximately 11:35 p.m., Redmond Police Department (RPD) officers responded to a report of a suspected intoxicated man in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, RPD announced.

The caller noted concerns that the man may attempt to drive. As officers arrived, they found the vehicle matching the description attempting to leave the parking lot. Officers activated their vehicles’ emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop.

Suspect blew nearly three times legal limit, had three prior arrests

When speaking with the driver, officers observed clear signs of impairment. Initially, the driver declined voluntary field sobriety tests and refused a preliminary breath test at the scene. He also claimed he had not been driving.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of DUI and ultimately taken into custody.

The suspect later agreed to a breathalyzer test, which measured his blood alcohol concentration to be nearly three times the legal limit in Washington.

RPD ran a background check on the suspect, which revealed three prior DUI arrests, with two previous convictions.

Redmond Police thanked the caller for trusting his instincts and reporting the situation, noting his actions helped to keep the community safe.

“This could have ended differently. Choosing not to drive impaired protects everyone on our roads,” RPD stated. “If you see something concerning, don’t hesitate to call. Your awareness can make a difference.”
