The Seattle Police Department (SPD) continues its search for a man who viciously assaulted an 88-year-old woman, allegedly biting off one of her fingers. The department is now seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.

The incident occurred on Oct. 13 at the victim’s home, located near 64th Avenue S. and Waters Avenue S. in Seattle’s Rainier Beach neighborhood.

Police said the woman was on the back porch of her home cleaning household items when a man approached and demanded her valuables. When she refused, she was repeatedly assaulted, then dragged into her garage, where the assault continued. During the attack, the suspect allegedly bit off one of the woman’s fingers before stealing her jewelry.

“The assault was pretty violent,” Seattle Police Department (SPD) Detective Brian Pritchard said. “The male severely injured the elderly woman’s hand.”

The victim was able to free herself and scream for help to get the attention of her neighbors. She told responding officers that she thought the suspect “was going to try to kill her.”

“This is one of the more brutal and heinous assaults I have seen,” Detective Eric Muñoz, spokesperson for the SPD, told KIRO 7. “This was an 88-year-old woman and, of course, she was seriously injured and assaulted during this robbery.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies assist in the search

SPD, as well as officers from Burien, Tukwila, and the King County Sheriff’s Office, have been involved in the search for the suspect — a man in his 30s.

“She thought the suspect was going to kill her. You know, to be 88 years old, although she was violently attacked, and she was seriously injured, she fought him off,” Detective Pritchard said.

The SPD Crime Scene Investigation Unit responded, and Robbery detectives are investigating the case. No arrests have been made, as of this reporting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000. Anonymous tips are accepted.
