The Seattle Police Department (SPD) released body camera footage for an incident where at least one officer was involved in a shooting with a domestic violence suspect who barricaded himself Friday morning.

The standoff between the suspect and Seattle Police occurred near the 3200 block of E. Madison Street. Responding to a 4:51 a.m. domestic violence call, officers arrived and found a woman in the front yard in distress. According to Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes, the woman threw herself at responding officers trying to get help.

“A call went out regarding a domestic violence disturbance,” Barnes told KIRO Newsradio. “Officers responded four minutes later and discovered a female in the front yard who ran to the officer’s arms. The female collapsed, and we discovered that she had been shot.”

The suspect, the woman’s boyfriend, fired at police from an upstairs window inside the building shortly after, prompting one SPD officer to fire back. The woman, shot in the lower back by the suspect, was taken to a nearby hospital.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents at 7:45 a.m.

The standoff ended at 10:45 a.m. following SWAT involvement. One officer who fired back at the suspect hit him, but the King County Medical Examiner has yet to determine whether the officer delivered the fatal blow or not.

“They don’t know, however, if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, or in the exchange early this morning around 5 a.m. with Seattle police officers, as one of those bullets hit the suspect,” KIRO reporter Luke Duecy said.

Aiming for transparency, SPD has released some of the body cam video from the incident.

Per department policy, one officer, Leonardo Bassi Rodriguez, has been put on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
